Male Nurse Arrested For Raping 64-Year-Old Nursing Home Patient
An employee at a Bronx nursing home was arrested early this morning after he allegedly raped a patient.
According to WCBS 2, an employee at the Manhattanville He
alth Care Center, on West 231st Street in Kingsbridge, spotted Nanic Aidasani on top of a disabled 64-year-old female patient at 1:20 a.m. Officials told reporters that staff members held Aidasani until police arrived.
The victim is described as having dementia and being unable to talk. Her children are devastated.
Her daughter Loida told WABC 7, "It's just heartbreaking, it's horrible that this is happening to my mother... She was at the nursing home because my brother and I thought it was a safe haven for her, a safe place for her, that she would be protected, but she wasn't protected, she was assaulted."
The victim's children received a call at 4 a.m. from the nursing home; the son, Alejandro, said, "We're still in shock right now, trying to deal with this situation. The NYPD is working on warrant and working on getting this rape kit done." Because of their mother's condition, there have been problems. From NBC New York:
Loida, who learned of the alleged attack through witnesses, says she took her mother to New York Presbyterian Hospital for a rape kit examination.
Doctors told her that because her mother cannot speak, they cannot perform an exam without court approval.
"This is very important, this is key evidence," said Loida. "My mother is unable to speak, so by doing this exam, you're going to have the physical evidence of what happened."
"We have 72 hours for them to perform this kit," said the victim's son, Alejandro. "Right now, we're running out of time."
The nursing home's administrator said, "Manhattanville Health Care Center contacted the police department and the Department of Health to report an alleged sexual abuse complaint. Our residents are our number one priority and we will continue to assist authorities in their ongoing investigation."
Aidasani, 42, was charged with rape.
Here's video of him walking out of the station, from 718Hunters: State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. issued a statement, "As the Ranking Member of the New York State Senate Committee on the Aging, it saddens me to learn that another senior citizen has been abused - this time, assaulted and raped - in a nursing home where the elderly are supposed to be protected. On this occasion, the abused person happens to be a member of my faith community. Since the family has reached out to me for guidance, I have prayed with them and for them. This morning, I will be bringing them to meet with one of New York’s best civil rights attorneys to seek legal justice."
