Grandmother bites Alsatian for attacking her pet dog

A grandmother has revealed how she tried to save her pet dog by biting an Alsatian that was attacking it. June Hatton was walking her Yorkshire Terrier Milly in Ipplepen, Devon, when the animal attacked her, sinking its teeth into the dog's neck.

After being unable to pull the animal off her pet, the 80-year-old bit it in the hopes it would relent. Despite her efforts her pet was mauled to death and Mrs Hatton was left with tufts of the Alsatian's hair in her teeth. Describing the moment she jumped on the animal, the mother-of-four said: 'I bit him through instinct - and I would definitely do the same again.'

Mrs Hatton was walking Milly in the quiet village when she says the dog appeared out of nowhere. It immediately attacked the blonde-haired terrier, grabbing it by the neck to the horror of the pensioner. 'The Alsatian had its jaws so tightly around my dog’s neck and just would not let her go,' added Mrs Hatton, a retired chiropodist.

'It happened so quickly that I did not really have the time to think.' 'I fell to the ground and I tried to bite the dog but all I had was a mouth full of hair. If I had a knife then I would have stabbed it.' Eventually the dog's owner was able to pull it off Milly, but the smaller animal had already stopped breathing.

It has since emerged the animal was able to escape from its home through an open gate. Its owners apologised to Mrs Hatton for the attack and has since signed a Voluntary Control Order notice, promising to have the dog muzzled when it is in public. Mrs Hatton had Milly for more than four years after taking her in from a rescue centre. Speaking of the animal she said: 'Milly was a feisty little thing, that’s Yorkshire terriers for you, but I loved her, she had a good character. 'We went everywhere together and spent all our time together.'
